The Flagler Legacy Compact Program began August 1997.  The Legacy Program at Princess Place Preserve is a satellite campus for Flagler Palm Coast High School and 30 students receive credits which include Ecology, Environmental Science, Math and English classes.  The students participate daily for three block periods (255 minutes).  The goals of the Legacy Program are for the students to become more motivated in school, set long term career goals, and become stewards of  the land and teach others the importance of our natural resources.  They accomplish these goals by completing service learning projects that enhance the preserve.

This unique program was created through a partnership of the Flagler County School board, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, and the St Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD).  SJRWMD provides assistance through their education specialist and other experts from their organization.  The Board of County Commissioners converted the former caretaker's house into two classrooms to provide onsite classroom space.

The Legacy program is vital to the preserve.  The students have helped develop the hiking trails by marking them, assisting with the clearing, and developing interpretive signage.  They also maintain  the kiosks at the trailheads and the lodge as well as helping maintain the trails and observation  areas.  They are currently developing a visitors center at the lodge.  Students conduct water quality monitoring on a monthly basis at five sites.  Visitors to the preserve should not not miss the  beautiful butterfly garden located at the Legacy classroom.  This garden was designed, created and is maintained by the students.  The Legacy students also  provide educational tours of the preserve for mainstream Flagler county students and students from other counties.
